4 years ago I was helping my friend Rachel move out of her apartment. I was standing in her empty bedroom when I noticed I had a bajillion missed calls from the same 3 sorority sisters. It was then I knew something was wrong.

Crescent 2005....WOW!
4 years ago MJ told me the awful news. The news that changed my life and so many other people's lives forever. I drove home shaking and in shock. I just knew there was a mistake.

Having a lunchbox @ Edna's 2006
4 years ago was closing night of the show I directed and choreographed-my hardest challenge at that time. I didn't want to go but I knew if you were in my position, you wouldn't disappoint your students. My wonderful cast of 40 talented kiddos dedicated their final show to your memory, not ever having met you.

4 years ago, I got in my car and drove to OKC where I knew I wouldn't feel like a whole person ever again. I met all of my favorite Oklahomans at Edna's to have a lunchbox in your honor.

Homecoming 2005
4 years ago we drove from OKC to Iowa and saw the lake that you always spoke so fondly of. Your extremely nice neighbors gave us their house for the weekend. We hugged your family, met your niece, and shared so many stories and memories of you.

One last huddle Senior year at the GPhi house
4 years ago, what seemed like thousands of people gathered in your honor at a beautiful church. I don't think there was a dry eye in the house. I remember burying myself in Lee's shoulder because I couldn't stop crying.

My beautiful guardian angel
4 years ago, one of the best friends I've ever been lucky enough to have was taken from us. Katie lived her life with a smile on her face and always a kind and positive word for everyone. She loved life and the people that were in hers. She was talented, humble, gracious, determined, generous, beautiful, honest, smart, and amazing.
We bonded over our love for quote books, cheesy sayings, "lyrical" songs, Wild Berry Margs from On The Boarder, and our love for Gamma Phi Beta. We shared memories of initiation, sorority formals, frat parties, broken hearts, dance classes, auditions, parties, nights at the Sip, nights at the Lambda Chi house, nights in each other's apartments just hanging out. She brought out the goofy side in everyone. She believed in true love.
There are not enough words to describe Katie and her legacy but perhaps the most perfect ones are the ones that Katie often spoke:
LIVE. ALWAYS DO WHAT YOU LOVE.

I'm so sorry for your loss - but you certainly have a guardian angel watching over you and all your friends and her family!! The legacy she has left with the fund set up in her memory will live on forever!!
ReplyDeleteThis is heart breaking and beautiful all at the same time. I'm so sorry you lost your best friend. I can't imagine a world without mine... I love the way you are keeping her memory alive!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! What a lovely tribute to Katie.
